Hymn Festival @ Lutheran Summer Music

This summer, LSM students will sing alongside members of the National Lutheran Choir under the direction of Dr. David Cherwien for the LSM Hymn Festival. Sought after for his profound programming and artistry, Dr. Cherwien presents hymn festivals all over the US and abroad.

This inter-generational event will allow the National Lutheran Choir to pass down the sacred choral traditions we hold so dear to the next generation of leaders in music and the Church.

Guest Conductor Dr. Brad Holmes leads the Choir in this thrilling and eclectic program. As Director of Choir Programs at Millikin University, Dr. Brad Holmes conducts the University Choir and the Millikin Men while overseeing a multi-tiered program of traditional choirs and a variety of vocal ensembles led by a nationally recognized choral staff. The choir has been at the forefront of the ‘tonal diversity’ movement exploring vocal approaches rooted in historical precedence, national custom and folk-music traditions.  In this way, the choir seeks to create a separate sound for each piece in its repertoire.

Spring Concert: Light and Dark

So often a shroud of darkness forms around those living under an iron fist, but music is the light that flickers, maintains, and grows despite the circumstances. Light and Dark explores the music of equatorial regions and the dark north of Europe. Influenced by each culture’s unique climate– where cold night breeds mystery and the warm sun imbues a particular colorfulness– music fills the role of storytelling in a unique and fascinating way.
