Auditions for the 2018-2019 Season
May 17th, 7-10pm & May 19th, 9am-12pm
Audition Registration is Now Open!
Our audition process is meant to identify singers who: are good fit for the National Lutheran Choir musically and technically; who are able to fully commit to the schedule; who demonstrate a commitment to the highest musical standards. Making music with us is a fun and rewarding experience; however, being an National Lutheran Choir member requires hard work, high expectations, and commitment.
Step One: Committing to the Choir Schedule
Singers considering an audition must be able to commit to weekly rehearsals and performances throughout the season listed on the 2018-2019 Choir Schedule (see below) . All singers of the choir have very busy schedules -- yet a commitment to the choir is a joy when we all do our part. Too many conflicts with the 2018-2019 Choir Schedule may cause undue stress on you and the choir, which we'd like to avoid if possible. If there are a small number of conflicts, you can work with the Artistic Director to discuss your options.
Step Two: Auditions
Sign-Up for an audition slot. Auditions will take place on Thursday, May 17 from 7-10pm and on Saturday, May 19 from 9am-12pm. Fill out the Audition form (below) choosing one of the time slots listed. Auditions will be held at Mount Olive Lutheran Church (3045 Chicago Avenue South, Minneapolis). Please be prompt for your scheduled appointment - this too is a part of the audition! At your audition, be prepared to:
- Sing a song from your repertoire that showcases the best qualities of your voice. You may perform something as simple as a hymn, or as complex as an aria or art song. Accompaniment will be provided although unaccompanied singing is preferred.
- Perform vocal exercises as directed, to learn more about range, control and other aspects of your voice.
- Sight-read a short excerpt and demonstrate your listening abilities.
- A Call-back email to be sent within 24 hours that indicates whether or not you are invited to continue in the audition process.
Step Three: Call-Back Auditions
Call- back auditions are set for Tuesday, May 22 from 7-10pm. Call-back auditions take place during the National Lutheran Choir's rehearsal time, and allow you to sing with the current members of National Lutheran Choir to explore your compatibility among all the voices of each section. The purpose of this audition is to learn more about your blending capabilities as a section while also singing naturally and fully.
Candidates will be notified by phone or e-mail as soon as possible about the outcome of their call-back audition.
Step Four: Invitation to Join
Singers who are invited to join the National Lutheran Choir will co-sign a covenant letter with Artistic Director, David Cherwien. This letter states that they commit to the season schedule, and will identify any known conflicts to which the Artistic Director has agreed.
Thank you for your interest in the National Lutheran Choir!
