Auditions for The National Lutheran Choir's 2018-2019 will be May 17th (7-10pm) and May 19th (9am-12pm), 2018.

There are several steps in the audition process, all with the purpose of identifying singers who are musically compatible, able to fully commit to the schedule, and who demonstrate a commitment to the highest musical standards. All singers of the choir have very busy schedules -- yet a commitment to the choir is a joy when we all do our part and the artistic product is the highest level of excellence. Our music making is hard work and the expectations are high.

The process involves four steps:

  1. Singers considering an audition must be able to commit to weekly rehearsals and performances throughout the season.  If there are multiple conflicts, it might not be possible for you to commit. If there are a small number of conflicts, you can work with the Artistic Director to discuss your options.
  2. The auditions are held at Mount Olive Lutheran Church (3045 Chicago Avenue South, Minneapolis). Be prompt for the scheduled appointment - this too is a part of the audition!

Those auditioning should prepare something simple to sing, either accompanied or unaccompanied. It can be as simple as a hymn or as complex as an aria or art song. Accompaniment will be provided although unaccompanied singing is preferred. The purpose of the audition is to sing whatever brings out the best qualities of the voice! Following that, candidates will be led through some vocal exercises to learn more about range, control and other technical issues, and will be asked to sight-read and demonstrate listening abilities.

Candidates will be notified by email within 24 hours whether or not they are invited to continue in the process.
  3. Group call-back auditions include the entire section to explore compatibility among all the voices. At this point in the audition process, it is less about singing abilities and more about how well one is able to sing naturally and fully as a vocal section. Candidates will be notified by phone or e-mail as soon as possible about the disposition of their audition.
  4. Singers who are invited to join the National Lutheran Choir will co-sign a covenant letter with Artistic Director, David Cherwien, which states that they commit to the season schedule, identifying any known conflicts to which the Artistic Director has agreed.

A 2018-2019 Choir Schedule will be posted by February 1, 2018.
